Peace River Alberta World Class Trophy Mule Deer Rifle Hunting Alberta, Canada is one of the premiere spots in North America for trophy mule deer and we are in the best of the best locations within Alberta, the Peace River region. It went on a limited rifle draw several years ago and the hunting has become incredible. In Peace River you can hunt beginning September 17 when the deer are in their bachelor groups or in the November rut. Both are equally good hunts. Our mule deer hunts run in September when the deer are in their bachelor groups and in November during the rut. Which week is the best to hunt Trophy Mule Deer? We can hunt mule deer anytime from Sept 17 to Nov 30 and we have chosen the best dates, Sept 17 to 30 and Nov 15 to 30. Either hunt can be great with weather probably being the biggest factor. In most places the rut really is the best time to hunt, but in our area the September hunts can be just as good, surprisingly some years it is better than the rut. The problem is that we can never tell you beforehand which week will be best. The hunt time that I recommended for a Mule deer /black bear combination is September 17-30 2011. The key to our mule deer success is our summer scouting, finding and keeping track of as many big bucks as possible. Our main hunting method is to drive around in a truck and spot the deer from the road and put on a stalk. It's not that we are lazy it's simply the most effective way to hunt the farmland. The next most used method is sitting farm field edges waiting for the deer to enter the field. We will do this frequently when we are after a specific buck. There are also some areas where we can glass the somewhat open river banks or sneak through the trees near fields, along the river valley but these are low percentage methods that take some physical fitness to do The mule deer that we don't kill in September go into hiding and then resurface in the November rut. The rut is also when new trophy deer that we've never seen show up. On both of these mule deer hunts success on a trophy deer is practically guaranteed, it is just a matter of how big he will be. We do recommend that you shoot the first 180+ buck that you see, it might be 190 or 200 but you may not see another big buck. If you hold out for a giant we may not even be able to find a 170 class deer in the last days of your hunt. In Canada thirty inch wide or 200+ score muleys are always rare. On all of our hunts we have you arrive in the evening the day before your hunt. This overnight hotel stay gives enough time if you have a delayed flight, you miss a connecting flight or your baggage gets lost. The bags can be located, flown in on a later flight and delivered to your hotel. It also gives time to sight in your gun or bow before the hunt. It is a 4 ½ hour drive to our hunting lodge from Edmonton. In Edmonton, where you may rent a vehicle and do the drive to the lodge if you prefer. Budget 1-780-448-2000 gives a good rate, about $300 for a car; just quote rate code "APOS". Directions to the lodge will be provided by us. This option also generally makes changing your departure dates if you tag out early easier and less expensive to do. If you want you can fly to Grande Prairie the day before, the best hotel choices which have a shuttle service from the airport are Holiday Inn 1-780-402-6886, Pomeroy Inn 1-780-831-2999, Super 8 Motel 1-780-532-8288, Best Western 1-780-402-2378. Make sure to book your hotel well in advance, this is a small but booming oil city. This overnight hotel stay gives enough time if you have a delayed flight, you miss a connecting flight or your baggage gets lost. NOT included in the hunt: Hunting license Air Transportation/Car Rental to lodge Meals & accommodations on "non-hunting" days Taxidermy, shipping of trophies Alcohol Weapons & ammunition Gratuities Extra Costs: Besides the $30 Firearms Declaration Form the only other extra costs would be one nights hotel upon arrival in Grande Prairie or Edmonton (about $200 US), meat processing and shipping or extra baggage on your flight home (the amount for all 3 of these items varies greatly depending on species of the animal and amount of meat, horns, cape you are taking home). You will need to register your firearm with Canada Customs when you arrive. To speed up the process you will need to complete the firearms declaration form in triplicate. You can download a form from their website at www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca Getting your antlers, cape and meat home: The easiest way to get your antlers and cape back home is for us to put the items in a thick cardboard box and for you to take it with you or your flight home (the airline generally charges $50 to $100 per extra bag). We put garden hose around the antler tips, clean, dry and then tape up the skull plate and we freeze the cape. Frozen meat can also be taken home with you in a cooler. Generally all the meat must be cut by a licensed butcher and you are responsible for paying for the processing. Shipping meat back to your home is another possibility but it is an expensive, complicated and time consuming task. Please be advised that if you choose to hunt with a bow and arrow or even a muzzleloader, you are thereby also choosing to reduce your odds of getting a big Mule Deer buck. We will do our best; we are first-class at what we do, but that in no way guarantees you will take a big Trophy Mule deer buck with a primitive weapon. Please seriously reconsider using primitive weapons if you are not in good physical shape or have problems such as bad knees that will affect your ability to hike. Our wolf hunts run from November thru to end of March. We will use bait piles, spot and stalk, and calling hunting methods. At this time of the year there will be snow so we will travel by snowmobile or quads while hunting. In Alberta the wolves and coyotes limit is all you can shoot. Alberta wolf and coyote hunts can be very exciting with an excellent opportunity to take more than one wolf and coyote. The wolf color variance is great from salt and pepper to white and jet black. Mature wolves from this area have skulls measurement of about 17-18” and will weigh well over 100lbs. These are the ultimate trophy predator.
